Kabayan Junction is my personal blog of an Overseas Filipino Worker or OFW, this has been my outlet of frustrations as a Pinoy away from home since early 2006. This blog hosted free by Blogger for more than three four ears (last blog post was 2010). It has been 5 years since i revisited this post.

Blogging has been a good frustration outlet though i don't write well but i still managed to post 200 plus articles (225 to be exact) most of which are non-sense jokes or blabs of what i think around that time crazy things and expressing my personal opinions of interesting issues. I also made a lot of blogger friends many of them are OFW bloggers as well, some blog for fun for a start but most of them evolved as pro-bloggers who makes money online. Believe it or not!

How to bring in the big bucks?

The solution is bring in traffic to bring in the big bucks! For Eric Nakagawa, a software developer in Hawaii, became an accidental entrepreneur by posting a single photo of a fat, smiling cat he found on the Internet, with the caption, "I can has cheezburger?" on January 2007. Started out as a joke but soon after posting a few more images in the same vein: cute cats with funny captions written in a silly, invented hybrid of Internet shorthand and baby-talk. He turned the website in to a blog, so that visitors could comment on the postings. The traffic on the blog, I Can Has Cheezburger, which he runs with his partner, "Tofuburger" doubled each month from 375,000 hits in March to 750,000 in April and 1.5 million in May. Cheezburger now gets 500,000 page views a day from between 100,000 and 200,000 unique visitors, according to Nakagawa. The cheapest ad costs $500 for a week. The most expensive goes for nearly $4,000. Nakagawa, an accidental entrepreneur who saw his successful business materialize out of the ether, quit his programming job at the end of May: "It made more sense to do this and see how big it could get." read the full story here.

Business week report it's revenue estimated at $5,600 a month based on ad rates and self-reported traffic data.
This is another Edison story, everything plus luck is big bucks. ha?

A Sure Business - Why Franchise?

Last week i post empower OFW with a risk free business, but i missed why Franchising is the most viable business to put-up. Here is why?

Why Franchise? Franchising (from the French for free) is a method of doing business wherein a franchisor licenses trademarks tried and proven methods of doing business to a franchisee in exchange for a recurring payment, and usually a percentage piece of gross sales or gross profits as well as the annual fees. (from Franchise PH) This is like starting a business by copying a successful business concept. That how business works, this is the reason Jollibee has many branchs and this is why many fast food brand comes popping out, they're copying how Jollibee started but with different brand and product lines.

Franchise brand has a ready market, therefore the franchisee have an instant brand name recognized with created customers. A franchisee also has a back-up support from the franchiser when ever he needs it. Franchiser provide training from facilitating plans, operation, inventory, maintenance and specially the accounting system (proper documentation) This is where most business failed by tracking it's earning from the owners expenses. Ever wonder how market "palengke" vendors keep on making loan to loan sharks like "bumbay" to refurnish their capital.

The best reason it is a minimum risk business (nothing is 100%, even Big fast food franchise fail also) But with a franchise business the future of your business is clearer. Some of the in demand franchises are Bakery (Julies Bakeshop, love the pandesal here) and Parlor (Reyes Hair Cutter). Empower OFW with a Risk Free Business

No more to OFW! This is what goes in my mind every night before i go to sleep! Ironic how life is. I dislike being an OFW (cuz i'm away from my family) but this is how i earn my living. I don't want to return home and work as a regular employee, i know my salary won't be sufficient to even pay the housing load i got from HDMF (pag-ibig housing loan) and the other regular expenses (monthly recurring light. water and other utilities). I don't want to be on the percentage of under-employed Filipino.

My profession is not in demand (how i wish i said civil engineering when the school registrar when asked what course would i take in college) still i'm lucky to be an OFW. I'm just a small percentage of the huge number of abroad applicants. Still the question that keep on bugging me is HOW do in empower myself or OFW like me? Is it to find a better paying new job?(if i want to be a professional applicant) Study again and get a better demanding course? (don't want to jack of all tree) What if i'm already on my late 30's should i still study and shift a career? Did you notice how limited my options are? The reason for these are Filipino parent's neglect to mold their children to be a self sustaining adult. I don't know why, but every time i hear a child, if ask what they want to be when they grow-up? I always hear child wanting to be an professional or in the field of service. (i knew this 'cuz i wanted to be a pilot when i was in high school) I've never heard a child say he want to be a businessman someday. I notice the reason it that they don't see an example. Most the Pinoy parent are employee or worker like their neighbors, friends and relatives. Where would our future business man have their vision to have a business, it's when they are already working.

I experience this because i worked with a young generation of Filipino-Chinese businessman. I was taught that the best solution to empower the Filipinos - OFW is to start our own business. What do you think? But wha kind of business can we put up? I set out a poll to survey what kind of business OFW prefer for those reading my blog (lucky no one is casting a vote). Anyway, back to business, what if we don't the capital or even if we have capital how can we be sure that this business would sustain our family expenses. Or in running the business should we leave our current day job. What kind of business will we put up. Do we have the skill for that business. If your mentality is like this i'm sure you won't even dare to make the first step to start your business. Remember the saying that "A 10,000 mile journey starts from a single step. I know you knew what i mean.

An in demand business that's growing now are computer shops or internet cafe. This businesses keeps on popping out, most popular are near schools, market places and crowded locations like junctions. Its in demand because of online gaming, school project and internet advantage (others are online dating also). I created a page for computer shop owner wanna be. Check my kabayan junction page. I don't want to be an OFW forever (1st anniversary of an OFW)

How long have you've been an OFW? Less than 5 year or more than 10 years. If you ask me, it's only my first year as an OFW, but it's feels like a century already. I'm not an extrovert person this is why i felt like losing a year of life with my family. Thinking of it makes me want, not to be an OFW much longer.

When i first arrive here in Saudi, most of the Kabayan (co-workers) already stayed a significant time of their life. Some of them have been here for more than 20 years. The average stay is 10 years. At first i feel the guilt of asking myself why did i not decided to work here earlier, knowing they are more financially stable now than i am. I feel annoy thinking i should have a better saving if i pursue becoming an OFW much earlier in my life.

After a year of staying here all my frustrations not working as an OFW earlier came to a halt. Being an OFW is clearer to me today than when i first arrive here. Now I know why other stayed here for more than half their life even though they are earning more than they would tkae home as manager in the Philippines. Why amidst the different culture and weather many OFW still bring their families to live with together. Why some family separation become permanent. How OFWs are maltreated, not paid on time, overworked but still holding to their employers. Why many OFW amidst prohibited by the law here still makes those thing for a living or an extra earning. And i came to a conclusion why their are many men OFW here than other foreign country. I could only say one thing "aching!" :-)

Entrepreneur Pinoy! What business type would you prefer?

We all heard story of talented Pinoy entrepreneur making big in the lime life business like Gina Alexander a Filipina-American purse designer making a bagful in Hollywood! (read her story) How about Ria Macasaet-Augousti half-owner of R&Y Augousti a brand in home furnishings and fashion accessories in Paris. Filipino author Erwin Bogs Rempola, his book Discovering True Wealth is making it big in Amazon.com and the owner of SM mall chain Henry Sy (owner of the 3 largest mall in the world). How about OFWs like you and me. I would tell you now i don't have a special talent like the name above, but what i have is a dream to have my own business. What i would do is to hold to this dream and little by little would make it to a reality someday.
