Beauty in My Eyes

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that is what my high school professor insisting when she defend her story of how much she is adored by her husband. What a funny cheerful old lady she was back then. But her claims are all true for Pinoys it's a stereotype perception to be beautiful one must have a caucasian features. Like white skin tone, pointed nose, colored hair and taller than the usual Pinoy. But where did we come up with this kind of thinking. Not that television and magazine has to do with it...but because we were colonized by two caucasian race, the Spaniards and the Americans (excluding the sakang race :-) This is why their offspring became the standard of beauty. But what if the perfect beauty is engulf by imperfections like this picture i got from worth1000.com (picture created by graphic experts)

She has caucasian feature but she is overweight. But if you look closer she is also the one on the bottom picture. Amaze about their resemblance....one thing is sure that a perfect beauty is a beauty skin depth. That's what beauty in my eyes..what is yours?

I Love My Own My Native Land

I love my own my native land...(you know what's next) This is sung starting from grade school years but now i can't remember how it goes. Do you?

This might be the reason why Pinoy's first thought is always about Philippines. Just like when i first started blogging; i want my topic to be all about Philippines nature, people and culture. About the beautiful life we Filipino's have the freedom and ease (bahala na) of how some live. The barkadahan and tambay specially Pinoy hopitality. With by blog "My Home My Philippines" that started out Jan/07 and lasted until Mar/07 but unfortunately i discontinued the blog site. Why? It's may be to much blog is unmanageable for me. This is why i'm giving "My Home My Philippines" blog a second chance by posting the things i write here at Kabayan Junction.

Here is it from My Home My Philippines blog:

Philippines, 7,100 Wonderful Islands

7,107 Islands with three main regions – Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao - this is my home my Philippines.

Philippines has a rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences. Prior to Spanish colonization in 1521, the Filipinos had a rich culture and were trading with the Chinese and the Japanese. Spain's colonization brought about the construction of Intramuros in 1571, a "Walled City" comprised of European buildings and churches, replicated in different parts of the archipelago. In 1898, after 350 years and 300 rebellions, the Filipinos, with leaders like Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, succeeded in winning their independence.
In 1898, the Philippines became the first and only colony of the United States. Following the Philippine-American War, the United States brought widespread education to the islands. Filipinos fought alongside Americans during World War II, particularly at the famous battle of Bataan and Corregidor which delayed Japanese advance and saved Australia. They then waged a guerilla war against the Japanese from 1941 to 1945. The Philippines regained its independence in 1946.

Filipinos are a freedom-loving people, having waged two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were perceived as corrupt regimes. The Philippines is a vibrant democracy, as evidenced by 12 English national newspapers, 7 national television stations, hundreds of cable TV stations, and 2,000 radio stations. The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world.

Filipinos are a fun-loving people. Throughout the islands, there are fiestas celebrated everyday and foreign guests are always welcome to their homes.

Philippines Quick Fact

With a reputation for being chaotic and corrupt, the Philippines has something of an image problem. But most who make the journey to the 7000-odd islands that comprise the Philippines are pleasantly surprised by their beauty and by the friendliness of the people.

Most of the Philippines is laidback, stable and relatively safe. The locals are an exceptionally helpful bunch and there are fantastic reefs and fish. On top of this, transport is cheap, the food is good, accommodation is plentiful and (for the monolinguistic) English is widely spoken.

Hundred Islands National Park

This is my dream location, since childhood i dream to visit and vacation on this location. My parent's province is also from this place and some of my relative live their. But until now i have not visited this marvelous place yet.

This small national park off the coast of Alaminos contains 123 separate islets, although some are just large rocks. Over the centuries the tides have eaten away at the bases of these limestone islands, giving them a distinctive, mushroom-like appearance.

The friendly and useful Hundred Islands National Park office is on the wharf in barangay Lucap, the jumping-off point to the national park.

The three most popular islands are Quezon Island, Governor's Island and Children's Island, but you're definitely better off finding your own island on weekends, as these fill up with loads of large families and beach vendors.

By far the best way to experience the park is in a tandem kayak.

Unique Taal Volcano and Taal Lake

It is the only one in the world. An island on a lake and lake on an island

Taal Volcano, in the Philippines, has been called the smallest active volcano in the world. It is located about 70-km south of Manila on an island inside a lake called Taal Lake. What makes Taal Volcano more unique is the fact that the volcano itself has a lake of its own inside its crater which is called the "Crater Lake." One can even swim inside the Crater Lake but don't stay too long because the lake's water is a very diluted form of sulfuric acid with high concentration of boron, magnesium, aluminum and sodium in salt form. The first recorded scuba dive inside the crater was made by a team led by Thomas Hargrove in 1986 to a depth of about 20 meters or 60 feet. There is even a tiny island in the Crater Lake which Hargrove's team also explored.
Unlike the Crater Lake, it is safe to swim to the surrounding lake of the volcano since this is a fresh water lake. The marine life study of Taal Lake indicates that the body of water here may have been, in fact, salt water in pre-historic time. Even today, one can dive to uniform depth of 30 feet all around the lake-bottom and still find traces of an ancient beach littered with seashells.

The whole area itself including the surrounding province of Cavite and Batangas was once part of an immense pre-historic volcano estimated to be 18,000 feet high which erupted violently and collapsed into a caldera with a channel opening towards Balayan Bay. Between 1572 to the present, more than 41 eruptions have been recorded with the great eruption of 1754 lasting close to six months. Just like Mt. Pinatubo, it darkened the skies over Manila for days, that people during that time literally walked around the city carrying lanterns even at 10:00 in the morning. It is most probable that this eruption finally closed the open channel to the sea that allowed the accumulation of fresh water from rainfall leading to the formation of Taal Lake.
With this backgrounder, it is no wonder that Taal Lake is home to the only known species of sea snake that inhabits fresh water, Hydrophis semperi. Even the fish called maliputo and tawilis are saltwater fish-like in characteristics. According to Peter J.P. Whitehead of the British Museum of Natural History, tawilis "is the only species of Sardinella that is found mainly in fresh water." Dr. Dioscoro Rabor even confirms that sharks once swam Taal Lake's water. He studied their biology personally before their extermination by overfishing in the 1930's.

Beauty of the Philippines

By Arthur Fitton

To many of us the beauty of the Philippines is found in various forms.

Firstly, and the most obvious to us all, is the inherent beauty found in the Filipina.

To those of us who have previously only understood the western culture, we marvel at a race of people whose women have never lost their femininity and the wonderful charm that all women once possessed. At first contact we are amazed that such wonderful women exist after having had our experiences with the ball bearing, self seeking egotistical fat whales of the west walking around as pretend men, so it is indeed a pleasant shock to the system to actually find a feminine female and gorgeous to boot!

To add further, they actually find us attractive irrespective of our age and whilst some of us may initially believe that it is because of the money in our pockets, that really only accounts for a small minority although it is hard sometimes to pick the genuine from the faker. Those filipinas from the rural areas with the least contact to city life are more probable to be pure culturally.

Secondly, the wonderful culture that ensures everyone has a place.

Taking pride of place in the culture is the family. This is a two edged sword to a westerner as being part of a family you

will have family duties and many happy and joyful occasions. Parties at any excuse and many family visitors but also family members may call upon you to exceed the bounds of reasonableness which I will not cover in this topic but are necessary to be known about. Courting a Filipina without having learned anything about their culture is extremely hazardous to your future relationship. Learn the culture here by asking questions.

Thirdly, The beauty of the Philippines.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you are able to put aside the extremes of poverty and view the country with an insightful eye then you will see much beauty. Learn to smile because everyone smiles and tune up that voice of yours to join in the sing songs. Also don't hang out just in a condo or isolated environment. Get out and visit some of the 7000 islands that await you. You can do it all on a pittance.

The Ghost of Ellen Meriam Go Adarna

These are the most wonderful picture she published. What an innocent face! Enough reason to say that Filipina's have the most beautiful faces..even though they say she is from a Spanish and Chinese parents. It still won't restrict the fact that she is from the Philippine and that makes her a Filipina.

Last month i created a post on how to be famous the Ellen Adarna way (or Ellen Meriam Go Adarna). I never thought that aside from her face, that captured many critics and admirer, her name would also bring many search engine searches. Since i posted her name..the word/name Ellen Adarna is in my daily stat reports. Worst her name is second on top of my unique word hit. This is bad, cuz Kabayan Junction is not intended for her fans. After i month the name Ellen Adarna is like a ghost that's hunting me. :hilo:

Anyway to help her admirer find her please go to her freewebs account Just be yourself. For the guys who want to meet her, she has a contest entitled "Your the Man!". She will personally choose the 10 lucky guys to become Guys for the month. See her instruction for details.

But before you read and submit your picture to her contest watch Ellen Adarna slide show title Pribading Gilid (rap music). Her pictures here are a bit adult rated.

Salute to Philippine Flag

We just celebrated the national flag day, May 28, 2007. This 4 color flag have a long story. And it starts:

"The flag of the Republic of the Philippines was adopted on May 19, 1898. The Philippine flag has two equal horizontal bands (blue on the top and red on the bottom during peacetime; red on the top during war); a white equilateral triangle is based on the hoist side - in the center of the triangle is a yellow sun with eight protruding rays and three yellow, five-pointed stars (one in each corner of the triangle). The ratio of the height to width is usually 1:2.

In the flag, the red color represents blood, courage and bravery, the blue color stands for unity and noble ideas, and the white color stands for peace and purity. The white triangle originally stood for the Katipunan, a revolutionary organization that led the revolt against Spanish rule in the late 1800s - it now stands for equality among men. The sun represents the dawning of a new era of self determination. The 8 rays of the sun stand for the first 8 provinces that revolted against Spain. The 3 stars stand for the 3 main geographic areas of the Philippines: Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

This flag was designed in 1897 by General Emilio Aguinaldo, the President of the Revolutionary Government, when he was in exile in Hong Kong during the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The first flag was sewn by Doña Marcela Marino Agoncillo, the wife of the first Filipino Diplomat (Don Felipe Agoncillo). This flag was banned by the Americans during the Philippine-American war and by the Japanese during World War 2."

This flag symbolize the Philippine people as a whole, now some want to revise the penalty for those who violate the use of our flat...read the full story here.

Harder penalty is this the answer...it's better to teach the history of our flag and our nation as a whole for the youth to understand the value of our 4 colored flag. Also to inculcate in their young mind the love for our country. But this move should start from the officials as they are influential to many youth. As our famous Pinoy phrase "Ang ginagawa ng matanda ang gagayahin ng bata". Go good not for yourself but for the future of everyone else.

Our year for Miss Universe

The famous line by the first Pinay Miss Universe "American's conquered the moon but a Filipina conquered the Universe" from Ms. Gloria Diaz, and after that the Miss Universe contest has been close to the heart of many Filipina.

This years Philippine will be represented by Anna Theresa Licaros a 22-year-old law student and a honor from her graduating class. That beauty and brain combine for our bid to the Miss Universe 2007 contest in Mexico City Wednesday, May 28, 2007.

Another Pinay at the contest are half bread Kirby Ann Basken
(Miss Norway) and Angelina Glass (Miss Germany). Another fact that Filipina beauty is for the Universe to see.

Pinoy foods to missed

One year away from Philippines makes me recall the food that make me feel a true Pinoy. Every person have unique identity, but being a Filipino away from home (Philippines) makes me want for food I grow up with.

Starting with breakfast of tuyo with fried rice and vinegar for sawsawan. Or the famous egg pair meals of tapsilog, longsilog, and many other's "__silogs" i can't remember the other pair. If not with rice breakfast alternatives are pandesal dipped in hot coffee or puto with it's counter part kutsinta, bibingka, suman, sapin-sapin, and lots more kakanins to choose.

Lunch time to savor to deserts of halo-halo, chicharon, choc-nut, dirty ice cream, ripe mango or green mango dip in hot and spicy bagoong. After desert it's time for noontime show then siesta time (lunch nap).

Merienda of banana que, camote que, maruya, boiled saba, pansit with sardines as sahog, spaghetti with banana catsup as sauce and hotdog. Other merienda are fishballs, or "KFC stalls" (
Kikiam, Fishball sa Canto) and kwek-kwek (duck eggs or penoy covered with yellow flour).

In the evening it's balut or pinoy, in the street corner BBQ stalls offer different parts of chicken, like adidas, helmet with it's neck, isaw also isaw of pork and even sebo of beef.

Hhmmm...Pinoy foods really makes me think of home. Though they say it's dirty and bad for the health, Pinoy still patronize this kind of food, the reason might be the cheap price or this foods fits Filipino taste. Anyway i look at it this foods makes me think more of home.

An Enchanted Experience

"Enchanted Kingdom" is a theme park located in Sta. Rosa, Laguna about 26 kilometers from Metro Manila with a land area of 17 hectares (Huge hah!)

They have various park zones like, Spaceport - Relive the glory days of the American space exploration program of the 1960s. Portabello - A replica of Portabello, a place in Panama in the Caribbean Sea where the riches of the Incas were shipped by the Spaniards. Brooklyn Place - Take a sentimental journey down the streets of Brooklyn, one of New York's five boroughs, as it was in the 1940's. Victoria Park - Inspired by the era of Queen Victoria's rule. Boulderville - Discover an era ruled by dinosaurs as you enter Boulderville, a prehistoric cartoon zone designed to capture every child's imagination. Midway Boardwalk - Coney Island, known as "America's Playground" in the 1930's, comes to life at the Midway Boardwalk. And Jungle Outpost - The heart of the Amazon is the setting of the Jungle Outpost.

"Space Shuttle" a favorite ride and the main attraction at Spaceport park zone. This is a big boy's favorite ride. Next time i'll bring a cam 'corder to document it's wonderful loop.

But my youngest "X" is contented riding the rino's ancestor, who is not amazed to see a dinosaur even a store replica (but this one is definitely a relative of the elephant - look at the front right leg..lol)

Now my second son is too friendly to have a picture with a total stranger. I'm talking about the boy in blue shirt...lol. (Happy halloween "B".)

A portrait of a happy family all together having an enchanted experience.

Local Pinoy Tourist - Good or Bad for Tourism

Thanks to the long holiday, our Kabayan have time to spend time relaxing and family get together. This year Boracay, Puerto Gallera and many beaches - resorts spot are flooded by tourist.

Surprisingly local tourist are reportedly greater this time that foreigners. Now...this is a good thing that Filipino's are enjoying life...plus the beauty of our country.

It may be a good news to you and me, but others specially business stall owner of resorts see it differently. Why? They say that local tourist are stingy, "kuripot", they don't buy from stalls but instead bring meal, "baon" and other stuff along. Funny to hear that Filipinos are always resourceful, "madiskarte" in every situation.

This is not the general perception of most business stall owner. Other's are happy and said that local tourist do spend and patronize stall goodies.

What every way other say or view this changing shift of local tourist. The bottom line is that we Filipino local tourists, balik-bayan or what ever they may be called, should be the first to explore and enjoy the beauty of our country.

Lets patronize and love more our country: "PHILIPPINES".

Beautiful Pinay

Another reason why Pilipina is beautiful than other. Second set of Petty Pilipina.

Philippine At A Glance

Lonely Planet write on it's world guide introduction to Philippine.

"With a reputation for being chaotic and corrupt, the Philippines has something of an image problem. But most who make the journey to the 7000-odd islands that comprise the Philippines are pleasantly surprised by their beauty and by the friendliness of the people.

Sad to read such a review from a big site in tourism. Our government should be more vigilant in to stop the crimes and corrupts in our country. Better to ask more to media play a big role to uplift Philippine image. More than ever media should research and report more on the good news that's happening in our country not just the easy and sensational crime news.

I Personally hear a German nationals' sentiments about this awful image of our country. He said in reality Philippine is a peaceful place that where he came from, but because of bad news that they see and hear in our national news at first he was reluctant to visit. But in the end said "he is glad he took the chance". How he is happily living with his Pilipina wife in the metro.

But not all foreigner take this chance, I know a business man supposedly going to visit Philippine but his personal assistant, a Pinoy, gave out a negative comment about his country. Sad to hear that our Kabayan's are the one's not saying good thing about our country when in fact amids the chaos and bad news circulating to our country, I personally believe that Philippine is still the best country, best place and most beautiful land in the world.

Manila: Top 5 Travel Place.

2007 is a good year for "WOW PHILIPPINE TOURISM" Yahoo Travel and Travel One sited Manila as one of the top search place in the net early this year.

It's good to hear that we belong to the top search site like London-UK, Frankfurt-Germany, San Juan-Puerto Rico, Bangkok-Thailand, Paris-France, Rome-Italy, and Amsterdam-Netherlands. This will certainly boost more visitor specially Western foreigner.

Hope that the searchers are our Kabayan expat's who long to see the beauty of our country and the historical center, Manila.

Online Booking Service

Summer is time for family outing, barkada adventure and balik-bayan trip for some. Most rely on relative or friends for travel guide and companion to enjoy vacation. This is true because of Pinoy traits of "PAKI" or please, we tend to ask people we know about the beautiful place they've visited. But every person have their own taste or gratification for beauty. What's good for you may not be ok for others.

Good that Philippine Hotel Reservation Service or PHRS is now available. Another good thing is that the travel consultation with them is free of charge ... "no cost". You can call them to see if it fits your budget for a dream vacation. For domestic # 812-PHRS (7477) for international just add +632.

Enjoy the 2007 Summer.
